With the price of gas these days, getting better mileage can really make a difference in your wallet. If you think of the savings in terms of tangible items – such as a dinner out – the motivation to save gas becomes very strong. Here a few tips for getting better gas mileage and saving money.

Tips

  1. Drive at or below the speed limits

Gas mileage drops at speeds above 60 miles per hour

  2. No aggressive driving

Your gas mileage can improve by up to 5% if you don't make quick starts and stops and move smoothly into traffic.

  3. Keep your tires properly inflated

This can improve your mileage by up to 3%.

  4. Use the lowest viscosity oil allowable for your car
  5. Keep your car well maintained and running smoothly.
  6. Keep your car clean and well waxed.
  7. Keep your car as lite as possible.
  8. Combine trips and share rides.
  9. Buy a hybrid vehicle (of course).
  10. Replace dirty air filters regularly.
  11. Try not to idle.

If you need to wait in your car, shut the car off.
